The New Bag Designers To Know Now

Sandra Semburg

Are you in the market for a new handbag? If so, you may want to turn your attention to fashion's new guard of contemporary bag designers.

A wealth of fresh design talent is shaking up the accessories market this season, offering everything from minimalist totes to kitsch cross-body styles.

According to Elizabeth Von Der Goltz, Global Buying Director at Net-A-Porter, the appeal of the lesser-known bag designer is multi-faceted. "Today, you don't just have to turn to the big power houses for a great bag. There are so many new designers that are making high-quality pieces now, illustrating great design at a competitive price point" she says.

"Real fashion lovers are lured in by these bags. Part of the attraction is the price, but it's really about the fun aesthetic and statement appeal. Undoubtedly, influencers have had a big impact on the success of these brands via social media and street style too."

Here, Vogue reveals the six brands dominating our shopping lists for the coming season...

The New Handbag Designers To Know Now

  • Chylak

Based in Poland, Zofia Chylak crafts sleek, minimalist bags with price points that belie their premium aesthetic. It's this winning combination of polish, practicality and affordability that has seen her designs become a firm fixture on the street-style circuit.

Only the fastest fingers will snag the label's miniature belt bag – the glossy mock-croc iteration, in particular, is consistently out of stock online. Place your name on the waitlist while you sharpen your reflexes, or opt instead for one of the just-landed vegan-leather styles in primary-bright stripes.

  • Queenie Fan and Day Lau are the life-long friends behind Hong Kong-based accessories line Cafuné. (intriguingly, the name is Portuguese, and refers to the act of playing with a lover's hair.)

Its small yet practical bags strike the perfect balance between vintage kitsch and contemporary edge – the AW18 fashion jackpot). Expect girlish pastel hues brought to maturity via neat lines and polished hardware.

A marbled resin chain makes the cross-body Bellows bag instant Instagram fodder. Choose the duck-egg blue iteration, and watch it bring a brighter note to all those heritage checks and camel separates.

  • Turkish label Mlouye's bags are crafted from sustainably sourced leather in the season's most essential colourways – think buttery browns contrasted with almost-saccharine pastels. With just the right amount of novelty appeal, they'll juxtapose a sharp-shouldered blazer with gently witty edge.

Make like the brand's hordes of street-style followers and wrap the Naomi belt bag around a too-big trench, or grasp the shearling Teddy Bear micro-bag against oil-slick patent leather for a pleasingly tactile contrast.

  • New York polish meets Italian craftsmanship in Ratio Et Motus's wear-forever bags.

Sustainability plays a key role in production: all leather is a bi-product of the meat industry, sourced from local Italian tanneries, and water usage is kept to a minimum.

Equal parts classic and curious, the smooth leather Twin Frame bag comes with a smaller sister that sits neatly on the front. Unfasten it to downsize come evening – there's a golden chain strap hiding inside.

  • An obsession with 1990s sitcoms spurred cult footwear brand By Far to branch out into bags for AW18. True to form, the pastel hues, high-gloss patent and petite proportions all scream Carrie Bradshaw.

An ode to the era's style icon Rachel Green, the slender Rachel baguette should be tucked neatly under one arm, accompanied by a slip dress and strappy sandals. The haircut remains optional.

  • The opposite to AW18's disco glitz, Peet Duellart's oddly beautiful receptacles are destined to transcend the seasons.

Statement-making they may be, but these bags are created not with the Insta-influencer in mind, but rather the confident, assured woman who wants a stand-out piece to transcend the whims of the seasons.

The triangular shape of the marbled resin Selene clutch is a metaphor for the connection between the sun, earth, and moon. (Try bringing that up at your next cocktail party.)

It's suspended from a 24kt gold-plated handle, engineered to be grasped comfortably in one hand. The faux pearls that float inside illustrate the designer's remarkable attention to detail. Practical? Absolutely not. Covetable? Definitely.

  • This South Korean label is part of The Vanguard: Net A Porter's new incubator for promising young design talent. Already selling out on site, designer Ji Hye Koo's rigid patent-leather silhouettes and chunky resin hardware chime with the new season's obsession with 1970s quirk. We predict big things.

Inspired by the bookish charm of Margot Tenenbaum, the structured black Milky bag is a prim doctor's style given a firm AW18 twist with shiny silver hardware and a swinging resin chain (are you sensing a trend yet?)
