Challenges coming to PBE

Challenges are coming for an extended stay on PBE before going alive in early 2022!

Challenges are designed to provide meaningful progression to all League players—so not just Ranked ravagers, simply ARAM aficionados, Clash contenders, and corrective collectors also.

Challenges are a petty dissimilar than the i-and-done accomplishment systems you might be used to. You can level up individual challenges from Fe all the way to Primary. And if that's not enough, in one case you've hit Main, many challenges also have their own Grandmaster and Challenger tiers. And only like in Ranked, only a sure number of players per region can exist in these tiers at any given fourth dimension. If you've e'er wanted to be known as the person with the most pentakills on the server this is your run a risk.

Nosotros'll exist launching with over 300 challenges, then they'll exist taking an extended stay on PBE to exam everything out earlier going alive in early on 2022. Because Challenges has a lot going on, some features will hit PBE later than others, simply we're sharing a full runthrough today so you know what to expect over the adjacent few months.

Challenges have their ain tab within your profile. You'll also be able to look up other players to cheque out their Challenges progress, too.

The large crystal on the left tracks your overall progression through the arrangement. Every challenge you rank up increases your overall score, and over time, your crystal evolves from—you guessed it—Iron to Challenger.

The five bars beneath your crystal stand for the 5* categories of challenges. Categories are a middle ground between your overall progress and individual challenges, letting you track your growth along detail aspects of the game. And (surprise!) they rank up as well.

  • Imagination: Modes and innovative plays make this category the home for those who cartel to dream
    • Bad Medicine: Kill enemies recently healed by a heal pack in ARAM
    • Wave Goodbye: Kill 20 minions within 3 Seconds
  • Expertise: Skillfully crushing your opponents is the way to earn big in this category

    • Team Diff: Score aces between minion spawn and 15 minutes

    • Spice of Life: Obtain Champions
  • *Legacy: Time-limited challenges alive in this category to commemorate past achievements others tin can no longer obtain. They don't contribute to your overall progress, nor can you level upwards Legacy as a category.

There'southward a search bar in the Challenges tab that'll allow y'all find any challenge by its proper noun or the criteria information technology tracks. You lot can also filter challenges within each category by group (ex. ARAM inside Imagination), most recently ranked up, or electric current tier.

Claiming Cards

11122021_PBEArticle_ChallengeCard.png

Front and centre to every claiming is its Token, a unique icon that represents that challenge, as well every bit its electric current rank. Below the Token is the claiming's proper name ("Gets The Wurm"), and beneath that is its criteria (Take Barons before 21 minutes).

The upper left-paw corner shows y'all how many points a challenge is contributing toward your overall Challenges score. The upper correct-manus corner shows yous which modes a challenge can exist earned in.

Finally, the bottom of the card shows the next major reward you'll receive for leveling the challenge up to a given tier. In this example, you'll earn the title "Early on Bird" once you hit Gold. Oh yeah, did we mention there are titles?

Foyer

Okay, let's talk about titles, Tokens, and all the places where Challenges shows upwardly exterior of your profile. For starters, nosotros've updated lobbies to make space for everything Challenges provides.

Your Summoner Icon is still the centerpiece of your identity, but ranked armor has been visually reforged into Ranked Crests. You can nevertheless swap between your Ranked and Prestige (level) borders, and you'll finally be able to freely cull between whatsoever of the Prestige borders you lot've previously earned, not just the most current. We've also added the Challenge Crystal right below your Summoner Icon. Hovering over a thespian's Summoner Icon will display a tooltip showing current and past rank, Summoner Icon info, and detailed Challenges data including their rank for each of the five categories.

Summoner names are notwithstanding in the same spot, but they have a new friend right underneath them: Titles.

Titles ("Dragonmaster") are earned by leveling certain challenges to specific tiers, and y'all can freely choose between whatever title y'all've unlocked.

Beneath titles are the Challenge Tokens, which you also saw before in the Challenges tab. Yous can equip upward to three to show off. Wherever a Token appears, you'll be able to hover over it to come across its associated challenge and Tier.

I notable omission from the new banners is the border trim indicating by rank. We're working on something tentatively named Imprint Accents that'll come out afterward the initial Challenges launch, which will include past rank. In the meantime, past rank info shows upwards when you hover over players' Summoner Icons.

Terminal up, we moved Position Select down next to Detect Lucifer to free up infinite. The Suggested/Invited menu is also collapsed by default, but expands back out when you click on it.

Identity Carte du jour

All these new identity options demanded an improved customization feel. The Identity menu is found in the same places as before, just supports Icons, Borders, Titles, Challenge Tokens, and any other content types we're able to create in the future. The left side now previews what your banner looks similar as yous switch things up. No demand to hit relieve—each change updates in realtime, with an undo button to walk dorsum changes y'all're non feeling (yes, yous can make a bunch of changes and so disengage all of them).

Special callout for the Icon selector: It uses the same tech as the Collections tab and then you can finally admission rarities, tooltips, filters, and search while selecting an icon.

Loading Screen

The loading screen has also gotten a facelift! The Ranked Crest redesign from lobbies has carried over, and player cards also take a more contemporary look and feel. There'due south also a functional change: Player cards now accept three sides. (Don't ask nigh the physics. They're Hextech.)

  1. Game information: Champion/Skin, Ranked Border, Kickoff Strike Border, Summoner Name, Title & Icon, Summoner Spells, Runes, and Honor
  2. Champion information: Champion Mastery and Eternals
  3. (NEW) Thespian data: Rank, Claiming Crystal, Challenge Tokens

Nosotros also added a Quick Switcher™ that cycles all 10 players' cards to the same tab to cut downwards on clicks.

Cease of Game

Stop of Game has also gotten a pretty hefty overhaul. We've split it into two screens: One for your personal progression and one for the game'due south scoreboard.

11122021_PBEArticle_EoG-Progression.jpg

The Progression Folio still displays all the things you're used to: Ranked progress, Champion Mastery, and Summoner Level on the left; Honour received in the lower right. The big modify is the progression carousel, which shows you lot the challenges and Eternals y'all leveled up, brought shut to leveling upwards, or had a standout performance on.

11122021_PBEArticle_EoG-Scoreboard.jpg

The scoreboard has a new wait and feel but remains very similar to the one y'all come across today. We couldn't resist making a few changes though:

  • Added lane position (in modes that take it)
  • Added One thousand/DA
  • Added a column that toggles between impairment dealt to champions, harm taken from champions, healing/shielding done, and CC score
  • The gold earned column toggles to minions killed
  • Added a column to show which challenge each player progressed the about
  • Honor also shows up here, since teammates may honour you after you've already moved over from the Progression tab

Social Comparison

11122021_PBEArticle_Comparison.jpg

As mentioned, yous tin can hover over Claiming Tokens wherever they appear. Once you've ranked a challenge up to Master or in a higher place, hovering over it will too brandish a leaderboard showing you lot where you stack up confronting the residuum of your server.

When you hover over another thespian'southward Token (or the Challenge Card in their profile), you'll as well come across how your progress stacks upward against theirs, including their server rank if they're on that challenge'due south leaderboard.

Timelines

Challenges will exist on PBE for a few months to ensure all the nuts and bolts piece of work properly. Ranked Crests and celebrations, every bit well every bit the foundations of the new pre-game lobby will become live in 12.1 to back-trail the start of the ranked season, but the complete launch will come a few months afterward.

In the first few weeks of PBE, we'll mainly be focused on identifying any core bugs and Claiming functionality bug. As we motility closer to launch, we'll also be on the sentinel for feature polish feedback and enhancements that we missed in our first few iterations. If you've got thoughts, please share 'em on social media! We're looking forwards to getting Challenges into your hands adjacent year.
